Match Report vs Uni Staff 18th August 2026 @ Bryn-y-Don (Skipper Jim, report Joe D)

On a chilly Tuesday evening, the Cas faced Uni Staff, with one of our own, Rhys, turning out for the opposition. Casuals lost the toss, and in a surprising decision, Uni Staff elected to bowl first despite knowing they would have to bat in worsening light later on.

Jim and Liam opened the innings, but Jim's stay was brief as he was caught for 1, leaving the Cas 2-1. Greg Cavanagh joined Liam and the pair got things moving with some positive running and a couple of boundaries before Greg was bowled for 12 by a ball that kept low. At 19-2, Greg P arrived at the crease looking to continue his excellent recent form.

Liam and Greg added a valuable 45-run partnership, with both playing some classy shots and Greg hitting the only six of the innings. Liam eventually fell for a well-made 17, leaving the Cas 64-3 after 11 overs. Joe then strode to the crease sporting his trademark elastic-band headband. Unfortunately for the Cas, Uni Staff introduced a spinner and an accurate medium pacer who strangled the scoring for several overs. Greg and Joe remained patient before finally breaking free with a few boundaries and well-run twos.

The pair added 42 runs before Joe was caught and bowled for 10 trying to accelerate. With the innings coming to a close, Greg continued to anchor the batting and reached yet another fifty before retiring. Gareth and Iwan pushed the scoring along late on, while Shakey was somewhat reluctantly called upon to face the final ball, managing a single to finish unbeaten. The Cas closed on 114-6 from their 18 overs.

As darkness descended over Bryn y Don, the Cas were confident they had enough runs to defend. Rhys and Tom opened positively for Uni Staff, taking 10 runs from the first over. Nadders, opening alongside Gareth, immediately looked in great rhythm. His probing line outside off stump caused plenty of problems and earned a wicket, stumped neatly by Jim. Gareth soon picked up a wicket of his own thanks to an edge and an excellent catch from Greg P.

After six overs Uni Staff were 41-2, with both Gareth and Nadders bowling tightly. In fact, it was probably the best spell Nadders has produced all season. Shakey and DT continued the good work, keeping things under control despite the batsmen rotating the strike effectively. Shakey's field settings were spot on throughout, with the batsmen seemingly determined to keep finding the exact areas he'd predicted, although frustratingly none of the chances stuck . Eventually, DT got the reward by clean bowling the dangerous P. Ritan, reducing Uni Staff to 76-3 after 12 overs.

With six overs remaining, Steve finally appeared after spending the day apparently working as Michael Sheen's stunt double, immediately making his presence felt with loud cries of "Come on the Cas!" from the boundary.

Pat and Iwan took on the closing overs and both bowled well against batsmen who were beginning to settle. Iwan claimed a wicket thanks to a good catch by Gareth in the deep, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, Uni Staff's middle order stayed composed, with G. Evans playing several good boundary shots, and they eventually reached the target in 16.5 overs with six wickets to spare.

Overall, another solid performance from the Cas. Greg P's unbeaten 50 was the standout batting effort, while all the bowlers contributed in difficult conditions, particularly Nadders with what was arguably his best spell of the season.

As always, drinks in the Keys and a legendary crisp feast were the perfect way to round off the evening and mark the final match of the season for several players.

Highlight of the game: Greg C trying to field the ball in completely the wrong direction because it had become so dark!
