Match Report vs Ferrets 06th August 2026 @ Pontcanna (Skipper and report Jack)

One of the few games at Poncanna Fields this season. The Casuals arrived in good time comfortably beating the tardy opposition whose lateness resulted in a 10 minute delay to proceedings.

The litany of victories continued as the toss was won and the Cazh elected to bat. 10 consecutive overs from each end was agreed to ensure a full 20 over game in the fading light.

Jim and Rhys were the opening pair presenting the ever tricky left/right hand combo and started in good form on an arid and bobbly pitch. The variable pitch and decent bowling from the Ferrets led to a steady but positive start with the odd boundary, good running and many full blooded swings of the bat without much result. Jim fell in the sixth over with the score on 35, bowled for 13.

Greg C, the next man in and the steady but consistent run rate continued. The pitch looked difficult to score on and despite the dry conditions the outfield was surprisingly slow as highlighted by the run rate of around five per over. A couple of boundaries and a solid 22 from Greg C before he was caught in the 15th over with the score on 80. Greg P in next with an injection of runs required. Unfortunately, Greg P was run out soon after departing for one. Joe Dilling in next, promoted up the order was unfortunately out LBW first ball.

The bleeding was stemmed as James Barber strode to the crease with four overs to go and runs needed. Both James and Rhys put the pressure on the opposition, running well and looking to score boundaries. A further 40 runs was added to the total in those last overs with a pair of consecutive 4s from James before he was bowled on the final ball of the innings. Overall, a solid total of 123/5 and a flurry of runs at the end of an innings which was well anchored by Rhys, finishing on 43 not out.

Batting:

Jim - 13 - Bowled
Rhys - 43*
Greg C - 22 - Caught
Greg P - 1 - Run out
Joe Dilling - 0 - LBW
James Barber - 24 - Bowled

Greg P and Iwan opened the bowling with the total looking defendable but reachable. The Ferrets had a competent opening batsmen, hitting Greg for six in the first over and Iwan for two fours in the second. Fortunately, both bowlers soon found their rhythm with Greg bowling a maiden and Iwan getting the first wicket, a well taken stumping by Jim in their second overs. Greg took the second wicket, a good catch taken by Rob from a spooned cover drive, as Iwan took the third and fourth wickets, another stumping from Jim and a caught and bowled. Both ended their spells having conceded 18 runs each with the total at 37/4 after eight overs with the Casuals in control.

First change brought a combo of slow bowling. DT making his return following his various medical procedures and Shakes attempting to deliver some turn. Unfortunately, the run rate picked up from this point with DT being hit for 13 from his first over and Shakes nine from his. The run rate continued at this higher rate, despite a consistent and competent fielding display, as the better batsmen took advantage of the slower and somewhat wayward bowling which luckily led to his retirement.

The game started to look like it was slipping away from the Casuals, but as DT was replaced with Rob and Shakes bowled out his overs at a declining run rate, there was still a chance. Rob took the next wicket, a clear LBW leaving the opposition 107/5 at the end of the 17th over, needing 17 from the final three for the win.

Jack was brought on as the final bowler using the slow wicket and his skiddy action to concede one run in the 18th. Rob backed this up conceding only three runs in the 19th and added a second wicket to his tally with an excellent catch from James Barber at long-off as the Ferrets pushed for the final runs leaving 13 required from the final over. A trio of singles, a scampered two, a bye, a wicket and a run-out followed, leaving the Ferrets seven runs short of their target.

Victory for the Casuals!

An excellent team effort and a thoroughly deserved win.

Iwan - 4-0-18-3
DT - 3-0-32-0
