Match Report vs Hawks

On a roasting evening at BYD the Cazh were abuzz with excitement,
from the arrival of new kit from Goffy, along with rumours
of a big WMW knock to come and best yet, the excellent news
that Steve had won the toss and chosen to bat.
The mood was flattened a few minutes later as it transpired
their skipper was also called Steve and that we would in fact
be fielding. From this point onwards Jack was the acting skipper.
Hawks won toss and elected to bat
Greg and Iwan opened up and were able to create lots of oohs
and ahhs from the Cazh, Iwan in particular beating the bat
several times with some lovely outswinging deliveries. Sadly
9 boundaries between them (some lovely slip drives included)
meant the runs were able to flow relatively easily despite
the relative bafflement of the opening bats.

In amongst the flurry of boundaries we had a bruising of
another kind, as Gregs third over saw him produce a rancid
thigh high full toss that ballooned out of the turf and into
Jacks cheekbone. After a quick on field assessment by Will
he was cleared to continue.
Luckily the first change bowlers brought about some much
needed control to the innings, with Shakey and Rob O slowing
down the run rate and eventually securing the first breakthrough.
Rob beating the charging batter in the air combined with a
nicely taken stumping by Jack to remove their #2 for 36. Jack
showing that his facial injury was of no concern at this point
as he was still selecting the correct ball to catch.

As is well known in cricketing folklore, one brings two.
In this case, some electric fielding from Jim (who had finally
begun to adjust to his lack of handwear) led to the other
opener being run out for 41.
Hawks 88-2 after 10.3
With two new batters at the crease the run rate was well
stifled by the spin twins. There were several near chances
flying around and eventually a high ball came Bens way, but
was sensibly put down to avoid a better batter coming in and
increasing the rate.
Despite changes in the field placement, Bens magnetism continued
to prove too much for the batters who couldn't help but pick
him out in the field, including a second high catch that he
was only just unable to hold on to.
Most of the ground fielding was kept to a very high standard,
which was very unusual, and in an effort to resume normal
service Greg was seen kicking one for 4 from Robs bowling.
This combined with the dropped catches only spurred Rob on
further, and a few overs later he picked up his second wicket
of the day, luring another of their batters into a foolish
charge to remove their #4 for 7, with another good piece of
glovework from Jack.
Hawks 107-3 from 13.1
At this point Rob was on a moral 4-19, but an actual 2-22,
and sadly he wasn't able to complete the moral 5fer. No worry
though, as Pat came on in the following over to bring more
action. Every ball in his first over produced either a wicket,
a boundary or a hastily run 2. Sadly for the Cazh this leaned
towards the latter two, but Pat did bring about the only catch
we were able to hold on to, finishing his first 1-16.

After taking a look at Steve-Os bowling, the wickets promptly
dried up and we conceded another 46 from the final 5 overs.
Pat was robbed of a 2nd wicket in this spell as a top edge
looped up to the keeper, but Jack was unable to hang onto
it and in doing so secured our fourth drop of the day. It's
not clear whether his enlarged cheek bone played a role here,
or whether Jim would have caught it as someone on the sidelines
seemed to suggest.

Hawks 179-4 from 20. Cazh need 180 to win.
With the Cazh needing a very chaseable 180 to win, Jim and
Liam were sent out to the middle to kick things off with a
bang. Jim proceeded to block 5 balls and knock a single off
the last to retain strike, seeing us safely to 1-0 from the
first.
Good news for fans of Goffys worm as it made an appearance
in the scorebook, though admittedly difficult to see at this
point in proceedings.
After that steady start the openers were able to string together
some nice shot making, taking full advantage of a rapid outfield
and putting on an opening partnership of 46, before deciding
to take a joint stand against batting longer and getting out
within 3 balls of each other. Goffys worm was certainly awake
and stirring at this point.
Cazh 46-2 from 7.1, Jim 24, Liam 19.
This brought WMW and Greg to the crease. Having circulated
rumours about the quality and duration of his upcoming batting
performance, Will took the opportunity to steady the ship
and build his innings with a series of nicely struck singles.
A solid partnership was building, and Goffys worm was growing
ever more upright - even touching tips with the Hawks worm
on occasion, until Greg holed out after being enticed by the
allure of the short boundary.

Next in came Ben, and whilst Will was content to deal in
single with the occasional boundary, Ben showed more intent
with some clean hitting that was unlucky to routinely find
a fielder. After pushing a bit too hard to find the boundary
he was bowled, bringing Rob O out with 2 overs left and a
lot of runs to score.
Cazh 124-4 from 17.5
By this point Goffys worm had slumped somewhat and the days
excitement was nearly done. A few nice strokes for four from
both Will and Rob brought the Cazh to a respectable total
of 144-4 from our 20.
