Match Report vs Ferrets 14h July 2026 @ Bryn-y-Don, Dinas (Skipper Steveo, report Shakey)

Looking back to July 14th you would know for certain that Charles III was King, it was a probably a hot and humid night for cricket at Bryn y Don and perhaps Keir was still PM. Well maybe. Yes it seems that long ago already.

Greg C and Rhys did a fine job opening our innings in the heat. With five boundaries, a few extras and a number of well judged singles, the bowling of the 41st ball produced our 41st run. This was, yes it was, a sound foundation with a lightning fast outfield to enjoy. Then the final ball of the opening bowlers’ spell gave the Ferrets the breakthrough they needed, Greg bowled for a very handy 12.

Disappointment turned to disaster as Rhys departed next ball for a combative 26 (four boundaries). Ferrets were on a team hat-trick! Who would you send in next?

After disappointment and disaster, a sense of doom devoured the Don – captain Stevo strode to the crease. One ball later the inevitable death march back to the dressing room followed a quick straight ball on off stump. A familiar denouement? Batting pads and gloves were hurriedly sought as 41-0 had become 41-3 and James B faced the hat-trick ball from Lawson.

Relief greeted two leg byes but the damage was done. James hit 3 boundaries in his innings of 15 but when he departed there was another flurry of wickets as we limped to 73 for 6 in the 13th. Some late hitting by Greg P, including two sixes, allowed us to close on 120-7 off the 18 agreed overs (it was a late start). It seemed nowhere near enough.

Greg C 12, Rhys D 26, Will 7, Stevo 0, James B 15, Iwan 2, Joe 1*, Gareth L 5, Greg P 34*, Goff and Shakes DNB.

Goff had the honour and induced a nick behind off the fifth ball. A good start. But the Ferrets soon took a liking to Goff's bowling with some effective hitting to leg. We hoped for some respite as the second wicket fell to Goff with the score on 26 (ct Iwan) but the new batsman Hood clearly wanted to get to the pub. Gareth bowled a good spell without success as Ferrets reached 56-2 off 8.

By the end of the 10th Hood had hit the last of his four sixes with Greg P and Shakes suffering as the Ferrets marched to 83. Just two overs later Hood retired with his brutal innings of 50 featuring only six singles, with the score at 109. Victory was secured in the 15th over, opener Lawson 41* anchoring the innings. A chastening defeat.

Goff 4-0-34-2; Gareth 4-0-21-0; Greg P 3.4-0-38-0; shakes 3-0-27-0
