Match Report vs Abergavenny
Bumblebees 27 July 2025 @ Abergavenny (Skipper Jim,
report Dan)
Yet another scrambled team was arranged for what looked like
the highlight of the season – playing at the Abergavenny
pitch (very nice) with tea! As it turned out, tea was cancelled
and the hot sunny weather we’d been experiencing relentlessly
all season was replaced by cloud and spells of drizzle. The
Bumblebees were made up of the youth of Abergavenny and some
of their friends, they were a tight knit bunch – like
the cazh, happy to take the piss out of their team mates,
though also had a penchant of testing out their sledging encyclopaedia
– which is something we are less used to.
The toss was won by the bees and the Cazh were fielding.
Dan opened up up the hill (that was Dan’s fault) against
the agricultural left handed who smeared a number of boundaries
through the fielders before Dan though enough was enough and
came round the wicket and got him first ball of that over.
Meanwhile Muhammed was enjoying bowling down the hill and
got some good lift off a back of length. His first wicket
was taken at slip by Will, followed by another 2 bowled and
another caught well by George. It was difficult to tell if
the batting was better than the score suggested or they had
just come up against a good spell of bowling (it was very
good). Difficult to tell what the score was at this point
but at a guess it was about 60-5 off 10.
Steveo replaced Dan and Cheese replaced Mo. Steve picked
up a couple – one early on lbw (looked high but given)
and another a bit later caught by Will again. As potentially
expected the Bees had pushed a few good batters down the order
and the 8&9 started to go to town. Ned Stagg bowled well,
Prath took a bit of stick as did George. Dan and Mo returned
and the 2 batters were told to retire to let the last couple
have a go, Dan was unable to snare a tail ender , but Mo picked
up another 2 (catches from Will again and Jack) and had 1
ball to get the best Cazh bowling figures (7 wickets) but
didn’t. This brought the *&9 back who were cleaned
up by Will and Mo. Bees finishing on 240ao off 38overs.
The BYO tea was taken and then it was skipper Jim and Jack
opened against a sharp opening bowling attack. Jim played
and missed a few overs before being bowled for 1. Jesus joined
Jack and the pair played excellently against bowling that
rivalled what Mo had done earlier – plenty of lift and
speed. Irritatingly Jack took a chance against a deep fielder
and lost out to a direct hit (23) and Jesus was just a few
balls away from seeing off the opening pair but got in a bit
of tangle and edged one to slip (17) – but at least
managed to regain the form that had deserted him for a few
matches. This brough Dylan Davies (a mate of George’s)
and off the back of a 50 the day before looked to continue.
I suspect the bowling might have been better during this game
and Dylan couldn’t quite get going but managed to stick
around with Cheese who started to accelerate. Dylan was run
out (11) with the score of 136. Ned was out first ball caught
by the bowler, Prath tried to kick off like he did at BWE
but was caught 10 and when Cheese fell for 70 the hope of
victory was ended. George (3), Steveo (10) and Dan (1) ended
the innings with Mo not out on 5. The total – a respectable
179ao off 36.1.
A good game that ended in sunshine and a chat with the oppo
(after the women had won the Euros on penalties) and a follow
up fixture (with tea) on the cards for next year.
