Match Report vs Glenwood
1st July 2025 @ Bryn Y Don (Skipper Steveo, report
Dan)
Up until a day or 2 before this match the Cazh were struggling
for numbers, but with a new recruit, dragging Big Willy out
of retirement and a few previous ‘no’s’
becoming yeses, the Cazh had a full team…and dare I
say it – a good side on paper…..
Failure number 1 – Steveo for the first time this season
lost the toss.
Failure number 2 – the match didn’t start until
almost 18.20, which did make for a late finish (but at least
it was sunny and the light held)
Dan opened up from the Barry end and DT from the Dinas end.
Dan’s spell wasn’t bad, but conceded at least
a boundary an over – the outfield proving to be quick
(as expected).
DT on the other had much better fortune, though the first
wicket to fall was due to a direct hit run out from Jesus.
He probably could have beat the batsman to the crease, but
a much more dramatic throw down was achieved.
This was followed by a much more uncommon achievement –
the first wicket – what we’ve come to expect a
little bit of wobble movement (loosely described as ‘spin’)
off the track to bowl the other opener who had loosened his
shoulders the previous delivery with a massive 6. Next ball
the incoming bat tried to take advantage of another tame looking
delivery only for it to be fired straight back to Dave who
miraculously gained ‘airtime’ with an outstretched
right hand above his head…everyone including Dave and
the batsman was shocked to see the ball lodged within it!!
If not the Champagne Moment for 2025, then surely the Absinth
Moment – as you’d need to be hallucinating to
believe it…
Another wicket was then taken by a very good catch by Rhys
on the boundary. 68-4 off 8overs.
Hasnat and Ahmad were first change bowlers. Both bowled well,
but the batters were looking to up the tempo anything not
directly to a fielder reached the boundary. Hasnat was unlucky
with 2 catches going down – one to Dan at long off,
running in (similar to the first league game of the season)
only for this one to be shelled off his little finger. The
other was technically caught on the boundary by Jesus, but
to save it from being a 6 had to release it and tried to regain
the catch like in the Big Blast…but didn’t. Ahmad
got his first Cazh wicket a good catch by Hasnat at cover.
Steveo gave himself an over but took the brunt of a bit of
whack so removed himself. The chap who was put down retired
at 50. Big Willy and Rhys were given the last 5 overs –
both picked up a wicket – both bowled. Final score 166-7
Dan – 4-0-34-0
DT – 4-0-34-3
Hasnat – 3-0-32-0
Ahmad – 3-0-15-1
Steveo- 1-0-14-0
Will G – 3-0-22-1
Rhys – 2-0-16-1
A sizeable total to chase down but with the fast outfield
and good batting line up (on paper)…possible
Bryn and Big Willy to open the innings. A steady start until
a rather optimistic run was called by Will running to the
danger end and didn’t make it (on returning to the side-lines
he admitted that he thought he was still in his 25 year old
body…(might need a patch update to the memory as well,
as that body went years ago!). Jesus next in to kick us on…
only for the unthinkable to happen – chipping one up
first ball to cover for a golden duck. Jack next in and he
and Bryn nudged, nurdled and thwacked each ball on it’s
merit taking the total to 76 off 12 before Bryn was caught
and bowled (39).
Hasnat joined the now hot and bothered looking Jack and hit
some flamboyant shots before going large on one and missed
it to be stumped. 109-4 off 16.
The target looked too far away at this stage and the bowlers
didn’t relent on the speed or accuracy. Even with ‘plenty'
of batters still to go in and only 4 overs to go – Dan
suggested to newbie Ahmad that he should pad up…met
with a confused look of ‘really’?? The batters
tried to score off every delivery. Jack retired with 2 overs
to go, and before he knew it Ahmad was in with an over to
go – and was stumped off a wide (wide not given) , bringing
DT to the crease with Dan who closed the innings out with
a boundary. Final score 135-9 agonisingly short of another
bonus point (although the book didn’t add up in our
favour either!) . A good game – just a little too far
in the end.
It was then off to the Cross Keys for the few who weren’t
dying of hunger to talk of DT’s stats on catching (not
as bad as everyone thought- as actually – he did take
a catch in 2022) and lecturing redundancies...yawn
