Match Report vs Wick 22nd June 2025 @ Wick (Skipper Steveo, report DT)

If your hamster has been lying still for two days, it's crucial to get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible. This could be a sign of a serious underlying health issue or torpor (a hibernation-like state) which can be dangerous if not addressed promptly.
Here's what you should do:
• 1. Seek Immediate Veterinary Care:
Contact a veterinarian, preferably one experienced with small animals, and explain your hamster's condition.
• 2. Check for Signs of Torpor:
If your hamster is breathing but still, check for signs of torpor like shivering, binge eating, or lethargy.
• 3. Try Warming Your Hamster (if safe):
If you suspect torpor, gently warm your hamster by placing them in a warm (but not hot) environment. You can use a heat mat or a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel. However, be cautious and monitor them closely.
• 4. Provide Soft Foods:
If your hamster is able to eat, offer them soft foods like porridge, baby food, or softened pellets.
• 5. Check Their Environment:
Ensure their enclosure is at the correct temperature, has adequate bedding for burrowing, and is free from drafts.
• 6. Monitor Breathing:
Keep a close watch on your hamster's breathing. If it becomes heavy, labored, or shallow, seek immediate veterinary help.
• 7. Consult a Vet:
A veterinarian can diagnose the cause of your hamster's inactivity and provide appropriate treatment.
Important Considerations:
• Don't hesitate to seek veterinary advice. Hamsters can decline rapidly, and early intervention can make a difference.
• Avoid waking a hamster from torpor abruptly. Gradual warming is essential.
• If your hamster is unresponsive and cold, they may be deceased. In this case, it's still important to contact a vet for confirmation and proper disposal.
By taking these steps, you can help ensure your hamster receives the care they need and potentially improve their chances of recovery.

A very strange way to start a match report i know, but this will all become clear later.

With the forecast mixed and rain promised late in the day the Casuals assebled at Wick in dribs and drabs. We were 2 short when the game started with only one of the two missing Casuals expected to arrive. Rob and Liam F opened for the Casuals but Liam (1) fell in the 2nd over caught behind. On his return from the middle Liam informed us that the single he scored made it 78 runs for the weekend. As u can imagine we congratulated him wholeheartedly on his preformance for another team!!!!!! Will had arrived just in time to join Rob at the crease.

Those of you not in the pub at the end of the game will be wondering about the start of this report and the WhatsApp posts. Well Paul was telling us about one of his much loved kittens who, in the recent hot weather he needed to take to the Vet as it was suffering from heat stroke. Steve then regaled us with a story of a much loved (citation needed) family pet, a hamster, that became unwell a few days before a family holiday.

Will (30) was next to fall, playing at a wide ball and getting an inside edge onto his stumps. Jack joined Rob and the pace of scoring upped a bit but it was not easy and the outfield was slow. Rob(26) fell next to be replaced, briefly, by Steve (0). This brought Liam W to the crease for his final game for the Casuals. The "Nylon Pylon" has been a great servant of the club in the few years he has been with us and he will be missed but we wish him well as he begins a new life in the 1950's , sorry, North Wales. As an aside Steveo was much put out when he had to replace Will as umpire due to will having to make an important call. Apparently at the third stroke it was 16.22 precisely!!

Liam (4) was next to go and Goffy (8no)joined the fray play his signature "flamboyant, ineffectual slashes" although he did connect with some and hung around until the end. Pablo (7) and Jim (6) had brief cameos but both fell bringing DT (0no)out to bat with a few balls remaining, he didn't trouble the scorers and the Casuals finished on 182-8

Tea was then taken of the BYO kind but with a promise of some food in the pub.

Back to Steveo's story. Steve obviously didn't want to spoil the family holiday with children crying over a departed, much loved (citation needed) pet, so he did the only thing he could think of! Any guesses?

The Casuals took to the field with Goffy and the Nylon Pylon taking the 1st shifts with the ball. Goffy struck twice in his spell with Wick also finding scoring difficult. Goffy got his 2nd and after 5 overs each they were replaced by DT and Steveo. Steveo got the next wicket an amazing caught and bowled and then it was drinks. DT continued after the break but Pablo replaced Steveo. Whilst DT's bowling didn't improve after the break neither did the batsmans batting which led to 2 wickets, Both catches to skied, miss hit balls down the leg side, one taken by Steve in an unnecessarily flamboyant fashion. This brought Kenny to the crease, who supported his skipper really well. Russ (the Wick Skip) was playing a blinder. The Pylon came back on, bowling well but with no reward. Rob and Goffy took the final overs where there were a few controversial decisions namely a couple of feathered edges caught by Jack behind the stumps that were missed, the threshold for a wide was brought nearer to the stumps and a, by all accounts, plumb LBW given not out. Anyway the grub in the pub was free so we forgive any misdemeanors. Kenny fell to Rob/Goffy but suffice to say Wick took the win.

Goffy 7.2 1 29 2
Pylon 8 1 39 0
Steveo 5 0 23 1
DT 8 1 36 2
Pablo 7 0 39 0
Rob 3 0 17 1

The usual pub is no longer open on a Sunday night so we went to the other one in the village where we were treated to Roasties and Gravy followed by Sandwiches.

So back to the story. So, the only thing Steveo could think to do was gently wrap the hamster up and pop it in the freezer!!!! Yep, pop it in the freezer to be thawed out on their return home where he could then break the news of its sad demise. A quick peruse of the start of this report will show you that the suggestions of what to do with a hamster that hasn't moved for a couple of days does not include "pop it in the freezer for a week or so". I will also have to take issue with Steveo's assertion that it was "the only thing I could think of to do in the circumstances ". I'll tell you why. He went on to explain how he had dispatched various other creatures namely a Rat and a Seagull. Whilst these were not family pets (probably, although he did say the rat was in a cage which sounds suspiciously like a rat of the pet variety) he didn't place any of these in cryogenic suspension. The Rat was drowned by placing the cage in water with a brick on top. The Seagull walked into his house injured obviously seeking aid for a damaged wing. He again wrapped the Seagull up and put it in a bag and took it to the Vet! Probably for the Vet to dispatch but humanely. Yes, he took the Seagull to the Vet and put his own, much loved (citation needed) family pet in the freezer.
I can't really think of a suitable way to end this report but if I could speak to his current pet, a cat, I would advise it for fucks sake don't ever start limping if Steveo is around.
