Match Report vs Chartered Trust 10 June 2025 (Cup) @ Bryn Y Don (Skipper Steveo, report Jack)

A hopeful evening was cast into immediate doubt upon arrival at our new home, Bryn y Don, after seeing the opposition — almost exclusively athletic-looking youngsters who, as we heard from them directly, had an average age of 25. This stood in contrast to the Cazh, whose players were, on the whole, neither particularly young nor notably fit.

Steve-O proceeded to lose the toss, and the opposition elected to bat.

Liam Warren and DT opened the bowling, and the Casuals got off to a decent start. The opposition certainly looked like a solid batting side, but some accurate bowling, a mistimed shot, and an excellent catch taken by Dan at mid-on brought our first wicket.
At the first bowling change, Hasnat caused immediate problems, taking three wickets in two overs. A great catch from Liam W was followed by another wicket — this one swinging from well outside off to clip middle and leg. Despite the steady fall of wickets (including a skied catch for Steveo - added post report publication as he's already moaning about not getting a mention...), Chartered Trust continued to score freely: hitting regular boundaries, running well between the wickets, and giving the impression that batters were retiring at 25 regularly (in reality, only two did).

Ed Stagg bowled a tidy first over, but after being hit for six early in his second, things began to unravel — resulting in an over featuring an unmentionable number of deliveries. Our bowling continued to be dispatched to the boundary, despite Rob Owens and Dan bowling well at the death and picking up wickets.

Chartered Trust finished on 172 for 7 from their 18 overs.

Liam W - 2-0-18-1
DT - 2-0-16-0
Hasnat - 2-0-10-3
Shakey -2-0-15-0
Ed Stagg - 2-0-38-0
Goff - 2-0-11-0
Steve-o - 2-0-35-0
Dan - 2-0-12-1
Rob - 2-0-16-2

Liam F and Hasnat opened the batting, with a high total to chase and a solid start very much required. Unfortunately, Hasnat was bowled in the first over for a duck, bringing in Ed — who hit a tidy shot for two before also being bowled.

At the end of the first over, the Casuals were 4 for 2.

Liam F hung in for a couple more overs before being bowled for 0. At this point, things were looking fairly bleak. Fortunately, Steve-o was in next. Steve-o was also bowled for a duck shortly after. 13 for 4 at the end of the fourth over.

Liam W was in next, and from that point on, there was at least a flicker of resistance. A show of force, even — as he and Jack built an (attempted) face saving partnership that lasted until the 14th over, bringing up the 50. Unfortunately, Liam fell at that point, with Jack not lasting much longer. Goff followed shortly after, also bowled.

That left Rob Owens and Shakes to see out the innings with over 100 required from the final over or so. Wisely, both carried their bats and closed out the innings.

A loss for the Casuals, an early cup exit, and a final total of 63 runs from the 18 overs.
