Match Report vs BOTS 4th June 2025 @ Blackweir (Skipper and Report Liam F, replaced by Dan)

In one of the last matches to be played at Blackweir before its switch to being Cardiff’s new ‘concert’ venue, the Cazh took on the BOTS in the Willow league. Given the state and size of the pitch (crap and tiny), apart from losing a valuable cricketing venue for Cardiff Midweek to play on – it won’t be missed.

The Cazh won the toss (by Dan standing-in the late arriver (VC Steveo) and decided to bat. With only one volunteer to open batting (Kev), Rob was volunteered, though fortunately his unhappiness on the pitch only last a few balls – out caught in the second over. Rhys joined Kev and the pair batted well on an erratic pitch against some quickish bowling, dealing mainly in singles (which was surprising given the far boundary was only about 30 meters from the strip) until Kev was out caught in the 8th over with the score on 36.

Now those playing for the Cazh for any length of time have seen some incredible batting collapses – the one to occur in this match was of the slow and painful variety, a little bit like the game. If we take Kev’s wicket as being the start – the following 8 batsmen made a combined total (off the bat) of 6 runs, the only downside as it were (certainly for those watching) was it took another 11 overs to complete. Rhys carried his bat and finished on 34 not out. The finishing total 74ao off 19.2 overs

In contrast the BOTS looked to finish the game quickly – and in many ways this was what everyone wanted, to get it over and done and forgotten as soon as possible. However, in taking an aggressive approach to batting on a pitch doing ‘everything’ – ankle cutters or in your face, the batters were flirting with danger. Dan and Pylon opened up the bowling and off their combined 8 over stint 54 runs were scored for the gain of 4 wickets, both taking 2 a piece , Dan getting a bowled and caught by Kev; Pylon getting 2 catches by Rhys and Rob. At this point multi-team player Josh was at the crease and Maxy was the first change bowler. Maxy didn’t do anything wrong (apart from a single wide), he successfully managed to bowl the ball in an area that Josh was very happy with and the ball didn’t stay low or rear up at all – instead the ball travelled a long way – 4 times, twice dropping from the air on the top pitch and twice reaching the top pitch along the ground. Maxy thoughtfully and thankfully finished the game off in 5 balls, with BOTs reaching the target in 8.5 overs.

Then it was off to the Blackweir Tavern for thankfully the last time of the season for a warm pint and packet of stale crisps.
