Match Report vs Penarth
01 June 2025 @ Penarth (Skipper Steveo, and Report
Dan)
With another rally round to find 11, the Cazh turned up at
a sunny but very windy Penarth with a bit of a scratch side,
1 newbie (Benedict), a mate of Pat who hadn’t played
before (Dylan), injured (Richie) and returning from injury
(Dan), and Foxy was allowed to be subbed in whenever the mood
took us. Skipper Steveo won the toss and we were batting.
The oppo had been also struggling for numbers as there was
a cup game going on the neighbouring pitch and another match
going on somewhere else – so it would probably be quite
an even affair.
Cheese opened up with Rob, both started fast with a few boundaries
before Rob was bowled out (10). Pat elevated to the dizzy
heights of 3 stuck around for 10 overs adding 3 runs to the
total, Cheese throwing the bat at the other end and retiring
on 50 (much to his disgust on finding out that was the agreement
at match start) in the 14th over. Syed joining Pat and was
next out after a brief 2 ball stint (5), Pat followed after
doubling his score to 6 by the 22nd over. 101-4.Newbies Ben
and Dylan now batting together – this was interesting
– neither really taking control over calling, so many
telepathic calls were made and got away with it in the main,
there was also some not previously seen batting shot techniques
, but regardless – they put on a much needed partnership
of 38 before Dylan was stumped (20). Ben followed soon after
lbw (27). It was skipper Steveo who stepped up to the mark
and bludgeoned his way to an impressive 42 being bowled on
the penultimate ball comically bring Pylon to the crease with
1 ball to go and was bowled! Dan and Richie had played bit
parts prior to this with 8 and 5no. However the score had
reached a very respectable 200. Paul picking up a dnb.
After the BYO tea, the Cazh entered the field. Pylon was
asked to open the bowling up the hill into the wind and Paul
down the hill. Liam picked up the first wicket in the 3rd
over with a good caught and bowled. Paul would have got one
which was hit to Cheese at mid-on, but the wind stalled the
ball and it died on just reaching Ed who shelled it close
to the ground. Fortunately he had another 2 chances to learn
from this in Pauls 6th over and Benedict’s first –
both taken. In between that, Foxy (now on the field) was very
unsportingly asked to bowl up the hill into the wind –
thankfully the skipper realised his mistake and this only
proceeded for 1 over as the ball rarely reached the batting
crease. Foxy was then switched to down the hill and Steveo
battled up the hill. In Ben’s first over for the Cazh,
he not only got the wicket caught by Ed, but also bowled the
other established batsman. At drinks Penarth were at 92-5.
At drinks Dan asked skipper Steveo if he could try a couple
of overs to see if his arm/ side had recovered enough - skipper
Steveo suggested he could have an over at the end… an
alternative option was provided with a bit more vigour –
ie Dan to bowl now. 6 overs later, Dan’s side had proved
to have recovered and had 3 wickets in the bag including a
good catch by Pylon. Syed also picked up the wicket of the
main stay batter, with Paul and Steveo returning and picking
up the final 2 wickets. Penarth finishing on 160ao after 38.2
overs, returning an unexpected but well fought victory for
the Cazh
