Match Report vs National
Orcherstra of Wales 06 June 2022 @ Pontcanna (Skipper
Richie, report Dan)
The evening was glorious, Pontcanna carpark and field was
eerily quiet, but both teams turned up on time and the match
began just after 6 with skipper Richie winning the toss and
choosing to bat. Dare I say it, the Cazh looked to have a
strong team (on paper), Rhys and Alex H opening the batting
and got off to a strong start against a conventional bowler
from the carpark end and a quick skiddy bowler from the river
end. Neither gave any chances away until the 7th over when
Rhys edged one off the first change bowler which was well
caught low down by the Orchestra keeper. 45-1. Will joined
Alex and kept the score moving happily along. In the 11th
over Will spooned one to cover and Alex retired. 76-2.
The run rate then dropped with 2 new batsmen at the crease
and decent bowling from the Orchs. The next 3 and a half overs
yielded just 8 runs for 3 wickets – Jack scored 1 before
being bowled by a good swing delivery, Richie looped one back
to the bowler and Steveo was caught off the first ball at
mid on. Only Richie and Dan had chance of “guessing
how many balls” before Steveo was out – and Richie’s
guess was made directly to umpire Goff as he crossed with
Steveo on his return to the side lines – he was correct.
The last 3 balls of the over were smashed for 12 with Luvvers
now at the crease. Jim was the other new batsmen and after
a slow start, made up for it with some connected swings. Luvvers
was the predominant batsmen, enjoying the far too often short
legside line from the bowler – hitting 3 6’s in
his short stay at the crease. Luvvers was on for a 20 ball
retirement until Jim refused to run a second in the last over
and Luvvers was out for 46. Jim clubbed a few boundaries to
make up for it and then run Pat out for a diamond duck last
ball. The Cazh finished on a healthy 154-7.

In Dan’s first match of the season since having his
knee op, he was given the option to open the bowling ..which
he took. The first over going for just 1 run off a slightly
shorter and more cautious 3 step run up. DT opened from the
carpark end and was rewarded from a loopy legside delivery
drilled down Luvvers neck on the boundary for the first wicket.
Dan’s 3rd was costly going for 3 well played boundaries
in-between or over the 3 cover/ mid-off fielders. One of the
other deliveries was an encouraging lbw shout but was turned
down. At first change NOW were on 53. Pat and Steveo took
over, both batsman were playing some good shots and put away
anything off target. The saving grace was both batmen retired.
Luvvers took over from Pat and bowled the no4 by a good full
delivery.
It was left to Will and Luvvers to bowl the final 4 overs,
the run rate had slowed but NOW were still in with a shout.
42 required. A chance was put down and over the boundary in
Will’s first over which gave the Orchs hope, the Cazh
fielders stopped an much as was possible and Luvvers maintained
a good line and speed, leaving NOW requiring 19 to win off
the last. The Orchs tried but were unsuccessful and resulted
in a run out in the penultimate ball. The Cazh winning by
6 runs.
On returning to the sidelines, it turned out that a couple
of spectators had come to watch (both from Cazh and other
teams) – and it became apparent why it was so quiet
– all the Cardiff midweek matches had been called off
by the council at 10am that morning – we were fortunate
not to have received that email!!
It was then off to the pub for a pint or two, compete with
the quiz master and his microphone and reminisce of last weeks
tray of chips.
