Match Report vs Glamorgan Centurions 09 June 2021 @ Pontcanna (Skipper Will MW, report Martin)

On a gloomy evening at Pontcanna the casuals unusually seemed to have a coach on the sidelines, with Rob dropping out last minute to let new dad Will MW play. I'll let you guess if Rob's choice of clothing for the sidelines was Southgate (waistcoat), Mancini (scarf) or full trackie (any northern football coach). Will went out and lost the toss but we got to bat anyway.

Sam C and Martin went out to open the batting, with Sam starting well with a couple of boundaries. Martin got out for a duck in the 3rd over playing all round a straight one and leaving a nice pink cherry on middle stump. In came Will, before Sam got out caught for 13 in a manner I can't remember (sorry). Dan King (young/handsome Dan) came in for his first game this season, getting his hand cut first ball struggling with a strangely bouncy medium pacer. A few balls later Dan went to pull the bouncy medium pacer as the ball landed half way down the pitch, except it didn't bounce. Already fully through the pull shot and basically fallen over the ball hit the base of his pad in front of the stumps and a laughing Dan (older/not quite as handsome Dan) had to give him out. Naren came in and him and Will put together a nice partnership. Will hit a couple of lovely sixes down the ground and Naren did well putting the bowlers off coming down the wicket and hitting a few boundaries. Will got out caught at backwards point for 34 in the 15th over with us 71-4 with 5 overs to go.

Out came Foxy, our 82 year old pinch hitter at #6 - in his 300th game for the Cazh, who unfortunately was bowled after 2 balls. Next came our keeper/finisher Jim who was also out after 2 balls, chipping the ball over mid-off, only for mid-off to be the tallest fielder on the whole pitch who caught it above his head. Out came Dan L who upped the rate hitting a couple of fours before Naren was bowled for 19. In came Goff with a VERY bright new bat which unlike his old bats apparently didn't have any gaps so he plundered his way to 5 before being bowled. George came out and ended on 4* which his highest ever score so well done George! We finished on 110, the coach didn't really say anything to us in the break and we headed out to bowl.

Cazh batting:
Sam C - caught 13
Martin - bowled 0
Will MW - caught 34
Dan K - lbw 1
Naren - bowled 19
Foxy - bowled 0
Jim - caught 0
Dan L - 14*
Goff - bowled 5
George - 4*
Extras 20

Total 110-8 20 overs

Dan L and Goff opened the bowling as usual, both bowled very well leaving them on 18-0 after 6 overs. Dan had an edge that everyone on the pitch assumed was out, other than crucially the batsman and the umpire (I was on the boundary so have no idea how bad it was, but Dan seemed pretty pissed so it probably was bad). Our first change bowlers were Naren and George, who both started well with Naren taking 2 wickets in his first over, one bowled, and one caught by Will at mid-on. George bowled tightly getting a nice catch at extra cover by Sam. On came Tim and the batsman took a liking to him and took him on, and this confidence also seems to spill into the second half of Naren's spell allowing Centurions to accelerate and take the game away from us sadly. Dan came back for a final over, and Dan K was given a chance to bowl some spin at the other end but with not many runs to play with the batsmen took their time and saw themselves home off Will's first over in the 17th over, with 20 balls to spare.

Great to get a game in, we were outdone both with the bat and the ball really but we'll bounce back next time
