Match Report vs Abercynon
26 August 2020 @ Abercynon (Skipper Will, report George)
Finally writing the slightly late match report for when we
travelled to Abercynon on a beautiful summer evening. With
the sun quickly setting the game was reduced to 18 overs with
2 runs for a wide and no extra ball to guarantee a full game
on an astroturf pitch. Will lost the toss and we were put
into bat, with a short boundary one side Martin and Steve
went out to open.
With Martin on strike he managed to get bat on ball and called
for a run where he probably shouldn’t have, and Steve
was run out without facing bringing Will into bat slightly
earlier than anticipated. Runs were difficult to score but
Will and Martin both got off the mark with singles when lighting
struck twice, and Martin was run out with the score making
the score 2/2. In came Chris Offley on with Casuals debut,
having never played cricket before in his life and everyone
else was expecting to be home before 7. But Will and Chris
managed to stick around for a bit longer until one skipped
up and Will top edged it trying to smash it to the boundary.
In came Richie who, with Chris and a big help from extras
managed to keep scoring runs with the lots of singles until
Richie was caught by the Abercynon skipper and we were 4 down.
Chris who had scored our only boundary with a 4 through the
leg side then managed to smash a big 6 (our only other boundary
of the game) also through the leg side until he was out caught
and bowled chipping it straight back to the bowler, out on
a very successful debut. Rob and James were at the crease
with very few overs left trying to get some fast runs on a
very difficult wicket to bat on Rob was out caught behind
by the keeper bringing George to the crease with 1 ball left.
He had a massive swing, missed the ball (as it was a wide)
and was run out at the non-strikers end making him the second
diamond duck of the innings.

Casuals 77-6 (18 Overs)
Did not bat: Goffy, Shakey, Dan K
With just 78 runs to defend Goffy and Shakey opened the bowling
starting with a maiden from Goffy and just one run coming
off Shakeys over. The perfect start. However, they were unable
to dislodge the opening batsmen who started scoring a few
runs pushing the ball around into space. After 3 overs each
Goffy and Shakey were taken off and Dan King and George took
over. Dan’s first over went for just 3 runs and managed
to keep the pressure on the batsmen. The same can not be said
for George who went for 10 off his first over including a
big 6 to the large leg side boundary, after which the opening
batsmen retired not out scoring 29 of the required runs. George
then came on for his second over and was smashed for 4 off
his first ball and we all feared for the worst with Abercynon
not needing too many more runs to win.
George then go the first wicket of the innings when the batsmen
tried to smash a six to fine leg and Chris took a high catch
on a very impressive debut. The next batsmen cam in and blocked
his first ball but then top edged his second ball and James
took the catch behind and George had two in the over. He got
a third with his next ball in a very similar way when a top
edge went through to James who held on to it again and George
was on a hattrick. The hattrick ball was bowled with flight
and pace, or so it looked coming out of my hand, but the batsmen
expertly blocked it stopping the hattrick of the final ball
of the over. It was the kind of spell the made Broads 8-15
look average. With Abercynon 3 down Dan then got his first
wicket and the other opening batsmen out with a shot caught
on the boundary by Richie and the Casuals could sense the
chance of an unlikely victory. Rob then came onto bowl taking
George off (even though he only needed two more for a 5fer).
Rob took a wicket in his first over with a ball hit very high
into the air brilliantly caught by Martin. Steve B replaced
Dan at the other end and got a wicket with his first ball
with a shot caught by Will. The two batsmen at the crease
then quickly knocked off the 15 runs needed to win off Rob
and Steves second overs but the Cazh did very well to make
a game of it in the end.
