Match Report vs Malpas
19 May 2019 @ Rogerstone (Skipper Dan, report Martin)
Just before the match, Dan made the mistake of accidentally
stating that we had a good batting line-up for the match.
Dan won the toss and elected to bat, in what was decided
to be a 35 over game. Openers Luvvers and Tesh come out, and
first ball Luvvers edges to first slip just to prove Dan wrong.
Fortunately the fielding side weren’t in on this pact
to prove Dan wrong and dropped it. Luvvers and Tesh then went
on to a 123 partnership with Luvvers getting his 50 in 30
balls, before Tesh got caught behind for 45. Jesus then came
in and got bowled for 1 with a special double bouncing Yorker.
Cheese (though he now works in salads and stews so may need
a new nickname) came in and they put on a 50 run partnership
before Luvvers went for 89 in an innings including 5 sixes.
Cheese was joined by Martin who drove and completely missed
a straight ball to get out for 1. Cheese was out a few overs
later for 40 to leave Foxy and Rob in. Foxy then hit a gorgeous
late cut for four, which according to the stats man put him
on his highest score for 4 years. Foxy then proceeded to slash
the next ball down to the boundary, only to be cruelly and
selfishly denied successive boundaries by some outrageous
dive. SteveO was next in, as all of Newport could tell from
his shouting from the boundary, so following a decent knock
of 33 by Rob, Steve joined Foxy for the final few overs. SteveO
smashed it around a bit and made multiple attempts to run
out Foxy, but the 79 year old managed to resist SteveO’s
charm and they ended respectively on 16* and 19*, ending with
a total of 278.
Luvvers 89ct
Tesh 45ct
Jesus 1b
Ed 40b
Martin 1b
Rob O 33b
Foxy 16no
SteveO 19no
Dan, Shakes, DT DNB
Tea was exceptional, I think someone elected to do tea watch
so I’ll leave that to them.
Dan and Shakes opened the bowlers, the openers looked pretty
decent and Tesh took a good catch off Shakes in his 1st over,
and it very quickly transpired that this probably decided
the match, as the remainder of batsmen were dads and their
14 year old sons. Dan and DT then took wickets leaving them
37-3 after 14 overs, with 6 maidens between cheese, Shakes
and Dan. DT and Shakes struck again making the outcome of
the game very clear, allowing Dan to give some of the more
part-time bowlers a go. DT’s 2nd wicket was particularly
spectacular as he somehow managed to actually nutmeg the batsman.
Martin bowled what could kindly be described as very slow
medium, and Jesus was allowed to bowl too after much pestering
of the captain. Will and Martin both took 2 wickets, both
taking more wickets than runs scored, the sign of all good
all-rounders. Foxy then cleaned up the rest of the tail and
took the final wicket, to cap off an excellent match for him,
to bowl them all out for 63.
Dan 4-2-10-1
Shakes 6-2-5-2
Ed 4-2-3-0
DT 4-0-21-2
Martin 3-2-1-2
Foxy 3.3-1-5-1
Will 3-0-6-2
Catches: Tesh, Jesus, Martin, Dan
