Match Report vs Chartered Trust 31 July 2014 @ St Fagans(Skipper and report Shakey)

A league match against Chartered Trust. At St Fagans. Hmm, not our most successful hunting ground and not a team we have done well against lately. But you never know.

Tesh and Andy were sent in to open and got us off to a decent enough start, dealing almost exclusively in singles but taking all that was on offer before Tesh was caught for 9 with Andy soon following for 12 to leave us 29-2 in the 7th. Four an over is a good base but we had to push on to the 150 target we had set ourselves and luckily Will was in a bit of form. The next three overs produced 20 runs (49-2 off 10) and we suddenly had some momentum with Will increasingly taking singles from what seemed every ball to add to the flurry of boundaries. Darren gave him stout support and even managed a bash high over midwicket for six (yes it was a shortish boundary) before he was finally bowled for 17 to end a partnership of 56 off 7 overs. With that impetus the casuals batting line-up just kept on hitting with another 24 runs accruing rapidly for the loss of three wickets. Unfortunately Gazza, Gareth and Dan only managed a single between them as Will simply kept hitting to take us to 109-7 off 17.

Forty-one off 3 overs was a tough ask but with Goff (8 not out) also looking to push on Will did some real damage to the Trust bowling figures at the end. Thirteen runs came from the 18th over, thirteen from the 19th and another thirteen from the last to leave us agonisingly close at 148-6 with Will finishing on an excellent 78 not out featuring a six and 11 boundaries.

Did you play in this match? If you did you may have noticed that I left out the small detail of the Chartered Trust innings. In fact they batted first and racked up an imposing 182-3 off 20 overs. Yes there was lots of effort from bowlers and fielders alike. Dan, as ever, was the pick of the bowlers and got a wicket early doors but we had no answer to their hitting. Sometimes it wasn't crisp and exactly where they wanted it to go but they hit the ball much harder than us and on the day the better team won. But at least we persevered and I think we deserved the single bonus point for reaching 148. Well batted Will and well bowled Dan.
