Match Report vs Cardiff Uni Staff 12 May 2010@ Sully (Skipper Captain Dan, Report Pablo)

The cobbled together Casuals arrived at Wenvoe within plenty of time for the 6pm kick off, well Mark was late but he was a late replacement for late withdrawals so we forgive him. The oppo were also on time apart for the skipper who arrived at 6ish and took his time getting ready for the toss with captain Dan. Dan lost and we were asked to field.

First impressions were that this was more our type of opposition, there were no fit young talented types (you know 1st team sponsored cricket shirts, 6ft 2 and 23 years old), which we have run into at every game prior to this thus far. They just seemed like normally talented cricket fans like us.

Andy and Nadeem opened the bowling on a firmer than usual wicket right on the edge of the square close to the tennis courts. The ball was swinging for both bowlers eliciting an unforgivable drop at slip by yours truly off Andy. My blushes were saved by a Keystone cop running incident and a good throw by skip running out their opener for 6.
Andy bowled 3 good overs before falling (not figuratively) for the old schoolboy error of trying to stop a moving ball with his foot. This has now happened to me, my brother, Dave, Porno, Foxy and now Winkie during games, we must learn to dive people. Hopefully the ankle isn’t too bad Andy, get well soon. Nadders produced his usual mixture and got thumped around a bit by the other opener until Dan replaced Andy and I replaced him from the football ground end.

We put the brakes on a bit before a lofted on drive off me was excellently caught by Muff taking their useful looking opener for 21. I am sure you would have caught it Skip but it was a great running catch by the VC with a dodgy back. Dan followed up by trapping the oppo skipper in front for a rare Casual LBW for 4.

The number 3 batsman seemed to have a good eye and played admirably at the other end slapping to extra cover and tugging the shorter ones to mid on before the collapse happened.

Muff and my brother came on and ran through the rest of the order. The ‘you miss I hit’ strategy applied and six of the next seven wickets fell bowled. Mark got 4 all bowled and Muff got 2 as well as the aforementioned number three smartly caught by Nadders at straight mid wicket for a plucky 31.

Uni Staff - 93 all out in 19.5 overs
Winky – 3 overs 0 for 11
Nadders – 3 overs 0 for 27 & 1 Catch
Dan – 4 overs 1 for 14
Paul – 4 overs 1 for 21
Muff – 3 overs 3 for 10 & 1 Catch
Mark – 2.5 overs 4 for 7

Now for the batting, we haven’t been that bad this year, it’s just that we have been batted out of games by a bunch of 1st teamers. Cheese and the Goad opened up against an attack with a combined age in three figures. The leg spinner seemed to frustrate both batsmen a little but he did offer up the odd freebie to Ed, Will on the other hand seemed to loose patience and missed with a swipe and was bowled for two. Shandy came in and played a few solid forward defence shots before picking the wrong ball to drive getting smartly caught behind for a duck bringing the scuffling Kim to the crease.

Both of the elder statesman bowlers did well, the medium pacer especially bowling his 4 overs for 11 runs. Ed was struggling with the Wenvoe ‘bounce’ and played and missed quite a bit and Kim wasn’t at his best but both kept at it. Cheese eventually found a bit of fluency and made his 3rd 50 of the season reaching 51 and Kim hit a few good balls and batted sensibly to finish on 32. We reached the total for the loss of 2 wickets off 16.4 overs. I wouldn’t say it was an easy or comfortable victory but it was still a vital win, which has broken our losing streak

I would also like to mention our debutant Goff, unfortunately he didn’t get a bat or bowl (I assure you that wont happen very often) but he fielded very well, running balls down and sending in good strong returns to keeper Kim. I hope you enjoyed your first game, you are now our lucky charm.

Casuals 97 for 2 off 16.4 overs win by 8 wickets

Casuals 14 points, Uni Staff 1 point

Ed – 51 not out (5 fours)
Will – Bowled for 2
Shandy – Ct behind for 0
Kim – 32 not out (3 fours)
