Match Report vs Penarth 09 May 2010@ Penarth (Skipper Captain Dan, Report Muff)

On a fair but cold Sunday we all finally made it to the scene of a few inglorious matches and were greeted by a bunch of athletic looking yoofs wearing flip flops and shorts and an old bloke. Hmmm.

Skipper Dan won the toss and put the oppo in and Winkie and Dan opened the bowling against a left right combo. After a fair bit of playing and missing and a couple of sharp chances going down the openers got into their stride picking off anything off line or short and helped by some rather comical fielding got Penarth running.

Nads and JCB (good one Richie!) took over and both struggled to find a rhythm against two set batsmen and with no chances being offered drinks were taken with Penarth over 100 for none it was going to be uphill from here.

D.T and Pabs up next and in the context of the game Dave did a good job and with a little bit of luck could have had both of the openers out. The lefty got his ton and duly retired and the other reached his and promptly gave us the first wicket of the day with a smart caught and bowled by Paul. With only a couple of overs left they gave it a slap and Shakey on for Pabs picked up the other wicket of the day Pabs being kind to his brother and not dropping a simple one at midwicket. Penarth finishing on 262-2 off the 40.

Dan 6-1-23-0
Winkie 8-2-24-0
Nads 6-0-59-0
JB 5-0-34-0
Dave
Paul 5-0-41-1
Shakey 2-0-16-1

Good effort also by Scott behind the stumps who offered even though he hasnt done it that often and all he got for his troubles were two bruised hands and abuse.

And so to tea. Good spread, fair amount of cakeage, although someone seemed to trouser all the chocolate rolls, good egg sandwiches mind but still not a patch on Llanarth and a tidy cup of tea set us up for the reply. Well, most of us as Richie, Dave and Shakey were supposedly collared by the tea lady who demanded that they stay and finish everything off. Where were you John!?

Mr. Cheese and Big Willy strode manfully to the wicket, well Will did, Ed's trousers crutch hanging down to his knees precluded any machismo on his part but made amends as he continued his good form with his now trademarked shot 'the cheese slice' and some spirited running as himself and Will put on a good start against some tasty bowling. D.T came on to umpire and got straight into the spirit of the game giving Will out L.B.W for a nice 20 which made us laugh a little harder than Will as Dave's finger moved quicker than any of us had seen any of his body parts move before.

Shakey came in and looked rusty as it was his first meaningful knock for a while and soon perished to a quick lefty bowled for 2. Muff up and discovers the lefty is rather quick, the ball smacking into the bat but mostly flying outside off which he mostly failed to reach. The token old bloke came on to bowl and tossed up some very slow “spinners” which were infuriating to play but it didnt stop Ed reaching his second half-century of the season before being bowled for 54. Shandy got stuck in and overtook Muff in about 10 balls shortly before Muff was out caught behind for a boycottesque 11.

Unfortunately Shandy went soon after with a quickfire 25 caught and bowled by the rubbish bowler who then got Nads bowled for 3 and JCB 0 caught.

Paul with 12, Dan with 11 and Andy with 10 not-out offered some resistance but when Dave was bowled for 2 we were way behind, finishing on 173 all out in the 38th over.
Funnily i thought we batted ok and I think we should back ourselves to bat first against some of these bigger teams. Thats not a criticism of Dan who as usual does a bloody sterling job for this club, just a thought [ED - in defense, I was going to bat first but given the 'look' of the oppo, I thought I'd make the game last past 5pm...]

Thanks to Andy F for his inimitable scoring and cheers for the lift Will.
Next.
