Match report vs Barry Wanderers 28 August 06 @ Sully Hospital (skipper Dan, report Shakey)

For those who took part it was mostly a match to forget. So where did it all go wrong?
Quite simply it was the Captain's fault but not in the way you would imagine. The day before the match, Captain Dan decided to celebrate his birthday and give the departing Horse a send off worthy of the man. A few of the cazh descended on the Albany pub in Roath and drinking commenced at a moderately early stage. There were women present so inevitably the evening went downhill when the drinking games ensued as some of the cazh proceeded to show they can drink far too much than is good for them. To be fair Dan did quite well in draining a bottle of Smirnoff Ice quicker than TH, Spanky and Scoobs and he pushed it even further by inviting the above back to his place to continue drinking. But it meant that the next day they were in a mess and Dan decided that if we won the toss we would bowl to sober up

Dan inevitably won the toss and we bowled.

Things began very well. After 12 overs they were 21-1 with winkie a very unlucky 0-4 off his six and Muff 1-16 (bowled dragged on) off his. There was also a very confident shout for caught behind off winkie but S Jones was deemed not out to the dismay of the close to the wicket fielders who heard a woody noise. Dave and Dewbs bowled ok enough for the next 8 overs but they were milked by the batsmen for a steady stream of runs. Dave was a bit unlucky with a few lofted shots that dropped short or wide of the boundary fielders and I for one was getting the feeling this was not going to be our day against some good hitting from the Wdrs batting.

At drinks they were 79-1 off 20.

Dan finally came on, bowling well, and winkie came back to complete his excellent spell of 8-4-6-0 but the writing on the wall was there with Dave going for 25 off his two overs after drinks.

After 27 overs they had progressed to 117-1.

The next 13 overs were utter carnage. I think we should report the Wdrs club to social services because they allowed some minors to see what took place next and it wasn't pretty. We were taken apart by some superb hitting from S Jones and a disciplined knock from Dave Smith. We didn't bowl absolute rubbish and had no luck at all as there was still some playing and missing and thick edges. When S Jones really opened his arms after getting to his century he was just hitting everything as hard as he could but only one went to hand which was a hard one over winkies head at extra cover.

Wdrs finished on 256-2. Dave claimed the most pyrrhic wicket in Cazh history with S Jones caught at long off by Dan for 137. The runs conceded by each bowler were 6, 26, 35, 43, 64, 72 - that's all you need to know.

At tea Captain Dan told the openers to aim for 200 and see where we were. Progress was not helped by Mike Ashton opening the bowling and going for just 9 runs off his 8 overs but for no wickets. The young quick found wickets easier but was more expensive and after 13 overs we were 38-2 (Spanky and Paul gone). It was then that the rain came down and forced us off. On our return it was clear that the bounce had become more erratic but it can't be blamed for three quick wickets from the change bowlers as we stuttered to 47-5 off 17 overs (Roach 15, shakes and Colin victims).

JR Roach controversially completed his 100 runs for the season. He edged behind (I learned later) and then looked to walk off the pitch. But he turned around to see what the umpire had done - there was no finger so he went back to the crease. To be fair I hadn't heard it either so winkie isn't blameless but it now appears James has wooden sleeves.

Kim and Dan made the score respectable with a stand of 53 for the 6th wicket. Kim hit three good sixes which brought on the stronger bowlers and we quickly subsided (winkie, Muff and Dewbs amassing 2 runs between them).

Our expert last man Dave went in with Kim just short of his fifty. He got it and then perished, caught pulling with his score on a well-crafted 50 as we were all out for 128.

Another dismal game after a very bright start. Maybe we should have tampered with the ball as the Pakistanis allegedly did the week before.
