Match report vs Chartered Trust 15 August 06 @ Wenvoe (skipper Richie, report Shagger)

Having successfully lost the toss, we were put into field, Shagger was taken by surprise as everyone –batsmen, umpires and fielders (just) were ready and he was still only half way through his ‘pre’ match ciggy. Having to cut that short – Shagger opened the bowling with a maiden. Rob Sage opened the other end and took a wicket with the last ball. CT 5-1 off 2. Shagger’s next 2 overs went for 9 including a non-intended bouncer (almost on a length) which the batsman managed to take evasive action and the ball raced for 4 byes. Rob’s 3 overs went for 12. CT 27-1 off 6.

Next up was Monty and DB. Monty mixed it up i.e. pitching it and not, and took a fair bit of punishment off CT’s #3 who liked (and played well) the legside pull shot. DB got a wicket in his first over – caught behind by Goughy (off the glove). DB was very unlucky not to get a stumping as the #3 went for a sweep and missed and didn’t seem to get his back down before Goughy took the bails (and stumps) out, either way wasn’t given. Monty also got a wicket (bought) caught by Shagger on the boundary. DB got another last ball of his allotted overs caught by Rob at mid on. CT 74-4 off 12. BA was next to bowl – kindly stepping in (pardon the pun) with his manky toe and Jesus sandals, as Matt dropped out late due to illness. BA was rewarded in his first over (bowled). Partnering him was Steveo who’s first over started well, but statistically got worse as the overs progressed as CT went on the attack in the remaining overs. No more wickets fell and CT finished on 125-5.

Shagger – 3 (overs)- 1(maiden)- 9(runs) – 0(wickets)
Rob – 3-0-12-1
Monty – 3-0-29-1
DB – 3-0-17-2
BA – 3-0-22-1
Steveo – 3-0-27-0

And so to bat….

As with recent games, the Cazh have struggled with the bat, and this game started differently. Shakey and Goughy opened the batting, and though the bowling was straight and full the pair alternated the strike well (partially due to Shakey finding it difficult to get the ball away). After 5 overs the Cazh were 25 without loss. Unfortunately with the fall of Shakey (bowled for 7) a collapse began…. Richie came in at #3, but it was Goughy who fell to one that kept low in the 7th over (bowled 12…top score!). Steveo not to be out done was also out in the 7th (second ball) this time to one that rose sharply just short of a length. Richie fell first ball of the 8th for 4 (bowled). Cazh 34-4 off 8. Rob and Pikey put on a bit of a partnership (22) until Pike fel for 11 bowled. Larry Roach joined Rob at the wicket, unfortunately Rob was next to fall for 9 bowled. Shagger came to the crease full of expectation, and realised his expectations might have been too high left the crease immediately golden duck – bowled (bugger). 61-7-off 13. With 5 overs to double their score – it was looking dubious….. Andy F turned up and after 2 ‘sighters’ cracked 2 big fours before being caught (8 ). Paul ‘ Jesus’ Stephens entered the arena, but having to keep his feet not to the pitch of the ball was stumped going for a big un (1). With 3 overs to go DB having his only 3rd bat of the season and Larry waiting for the ‘loose’ one batted out putting on 5 runs between them, though the total was helped no end by 2 fours (byes) . The Cazh finishing well off the pace 82-9. The Trust bowled very well and were even able to keep their regular bowler until last.

Congratulations to Andy F as he completed his 150th appearance for the Cazh in this game.

Just to top it off, the game the following evening at Wenvoe was cancelled at 10.30 am after rain during the night, by 1pm the ground was dry and the sun was shining – but the b*stards wouldn’t change their minds about the fixture…..the mid-week season has now ended.
