Match Report vs Chartered
Trust 19 July 2016 @ St Fagans (Skipper and report
Kim)
We arrived at sunny St Fagan’s on, apparently [didn’t
notice it], one of the hottest day of the year for only our
second league game (if you discard Rhiwbina match) of the
season. So far in the league this year we have played 1 and
lost 1, and tonight’s game was against Chartered Trust,
a team that is top of the league and that we haven’t
beaten in a very very very long time [no exaggeration]!*
However, there were some signs that tonight might be different!
Firstly, we were given the privilege of playing on the first
team wicket, then we were informed that neither the Saffers
brothers were playing and lastly we had a couple of newbies
that have never played CT so had no fear!
The toss was won by CT who elected to bat first. 10 Casuals
took to the field with Rumman stuck in traffic. Dan and DT
opened the bowling. DT led by example and got both of their
openers out early. One was caught by Mr Tickle whilst the
other stumped by Jesus. His 3rd wicket soon followed courtesy
of a straightforward lbw decision. Shagger also bowled well
but went unrewarded in his opening spell of 2 overs. He was
brought back into the attack later and got an easy wicket
against one of the tailsenders. In the midst of all this Rumman
has turned up. No idea what the score was at any stage of
their innings as nothing in the scorebook but fair to say
all the bowlers bowled well with everyone taking at least
one wicket. CT was bowled out first ball of the last over
for 110. A possible upset was on the card!
Daniel San 4 – 1 – 10 – 1
DT 4 – 0 – 28 – 3
Shakey 4 – 0 – 24 – 2
Tickle 3 – 0 – 21 – 2
Osama 3.1 – 0 – 14 – 1
Richie 2 – 1 – 13 – 1
Here is a question for our resident stato, when was the last
time that every bowler that bowled took at least one wicket?
To make harder, with a minimum number of 6 bowlers like in
this match?
It is worth mentioning that a far more entertaining match
was taking place at the far ground. The entertainment was
of course off the field where a large army of supporters was
supporting their team, Cardiff Medics against Eclipse in the
Willow/Full-toss Cup SF. A number of their supporters were
causing distraction to our game as they made frequent visits
passed the clubhouse. Enough said...students...sunshine...distractions...will
leave this to your imagination!
Despite this we ploughed on. And on to the run chase, an
actual gettable target of 111 was needed.
Kim and Britpop opened and the first legitimate bowl took
place on the 5th attempt (the other 4 delivers all going down
leg). Kim was first out bowled through the gate for 5. Disaster
struck in the next over with Jesus caught off the gloves for
0. 17 for 2 and a big challenge ahead! Harry (Britpop’s
mate) joined the man himself and looked at ease with a glorious
square drive for 4. Unfortunately we lost two quick wickets
with Britpop given out lbw for 9 and Harry hitting to the
fielder positioned at deep square leg for 7. 38 for 4 after
8 overs. A partnership was needed and a partnership was forged
between Rumman and Osama. The two put on an excellent 56 for
the 5th wicket. During this partnership Rumman has to change
his bat as it was too heavy which was a surprise to all the
Casuals on the side…but he might have been right as
the next ball was dispatched for 6, his first for the Casuals.
The running between the wickets was special and unique with
some interesting communication like ‘how old are you?’.
In the 18th over Rumman got caught for 27 with the score on
98. An excellent effort. With 13 needed off 15 balls (I think)
Mr Tickle strolled to the crease. At the end of the 18th over
101 was on board, 10 off 12 balls…5 runs scored in the
19th, leaving 5 to win off the last over. Mr Tickle facing…first
ball…4 to somewhere…big sigh of relief on the
balcony…second ball…hit through the infield and
the required one run was taken …what …they running
a second…why…who knows…it doesn’t
matter…we won…we won. The Casuals won by 5 wickets
with Mr Tickle 10 not out and some bearded guy at the other
end 23 not out. We also need to thank the opposition for their
wayward bowling with 25 wides, 5 no balls and 1 leg bye!
* No exaggeration…the last time we didn’t lose
to CT was 18th July 2007 when we tied. For those that are
really interested to know when we last beat Chartered Trust
than you will need to go back a couple more months to 3rd
May (of the same year) to witness our last win against CT.
