Match Report vs Cardiff
Uni Staff 02 August 2011@ Wenvoe (Skipper Muff, report
Gaz T)
On a slightly cloudy yet warm evening the Cazh were looking
forward to a slightly more serious and sober game of cricket
than was provided by the previous evenings offerings. We won
the toss (I assume) and opted to bat, and out walked JF and
Will to get us off to a good start.
The first over yielded 8 runs, however, only 1 came from
the bat. Next over, and on came Montgomery, whos action provided
the remaining Cazh with a topic for discussion surrounding
the legalities of his action. Whatever the opinion was JF
was soon back with the scorers as he was bowled to a ball
that kept a little low (8 for 1). Out strode Adam to join
Will looking to pick up the pace. The score ticked along steadily
for the next 4 overs until Will was caught and bowled by Montgomery
for 4, scored off a solitary boundary (28 for 2). A wicket
maiden saw Montogomery finish on figures of 2 for 11 off his
3 overs.
JR joined Adam in the middle and together they set about
punishing the change of bowlers. Adam was soon smashing balls
to the leg-side boundary (even if they pitched outside off)
and after swinging and missing at a few JR finally started
connecting and upping the run rate. Some great running between
the wickets pushed the score past a 100 with ease, even with
a one short called by the umpire. Adam soon picked up a well
deserved second half century of his brief Cazh career before
being run out for 51 after asuperb partnership of 99 with
JR (wjatever happened to that single?).
Out came Gaz and Gwion with instructions to keep the run
rate up in the final 2 overs only to return to the pavilion
soon after, leaving JR not out at the crease on 40. 139 for
5, a decent and quite defendable score to say the least.
Will c&b 4
JF bowled 1
Adam run out 51
JR not out 40
Gaz bowled 2
Gwion run out 5
DNB Darren, Kim, Paul, Dan, Muff
Extras 36 (inc 20 wides)
As the Cazh took to the field the sun decided to creep out
from behind the clouds. Dan and Muff opened proceedings keeping
it tight for the first 6 overs with Muff taking a caught and
bowled which wouldn't have looked out of place in the Matrix
as the ball whizzed over his shoulder.
Paul and Kim provided the first change of bowlers. Paul continued
to frustrate the batsmen and took 2 for 11 off his 3 overs
including a doosrah which beat the batsman all ends up. Kim,
following a tight first over, decided that wides and boundaries
would make the match a little more interesting. The continued
sharpness in the field, including a run out (Dan) and what
was almost a sensational catch by JR (the call of what a drop
from someone seemesd a bit harsh), kept the runs down and
gave the oppsosition no chance of victory (72 for 4 off 12
overs).
The next change of bowler saw Darren enter the fray and started
with a controlled first over. Next up Gaz with the instruction
to keep it straight and tight. 10 balls later, Gaz completed
the over safe in the knowledge that the captain would put
him out of his misery and pass the ball to someone else next
time round. Darren once again kept it reasonably tight, before,
hang on a minute, back comes Gaz to bowl only a 7 ball over
this time round. Darren finished off his overs with another
tight over, before Gaz was entrusted with final over with
the opposition needing 24 to win. The best that can be said
is that they didn't manage it, and there was another run out
(Will/Gaz T), falling 7 runs short of the target.
Dan 3-0-15-0
Muff 3-0-8-1
Paul 3-0-11-2
Kim 3-0-32-0
Darren 3-0-23-0
Gaz 3-0-42-0
2 x run outs
Extras 34 (including 27 wides)
What started off as a stroll in the park with some good batting,
good fielding, good bowling and some lets say indifferent
bowling ended up in a tight last over where the last ball
had to be re-taken as it was a wide.
A special mention should go to Kim who umpired for 18 overs
and bowled almost 5 overs (which was surprisingly even more
than Gaz !).
Another victory anyway and on to the final on Thursday and
good luck to all who are playing. Come on the Cazh!
