Match report vs CBBies 8 May 08@ Wenvoe (Skipper and report Muff)

A lovely warm, hazy evening greeted the players to wenvoe. on inspection the pitch, though soft, was a credit to the often maligned wenvoe ground staff and it was game on.

Muff, steering the good ship casuals for the first time won the toss(!) and decided to put the oppo in.
Pabs and Shandy were entrusted with the opening salvo and we were treated to an exibition of cross bat slogging from Imran, Paul particulary being unlucky as the Cbbies got off to a flyer. All good things come to an end though and Pabs finally got his man with Sharif taking a very good catch at mid wicket. Shandy bowled an excellent 4 overs up the hill being rewarded with a wicket, bowled. the Cbbies looked likely to get a big total but were virtually stopped in there tracks by 8 good overs from Kim and Muff (modesty not my strong point!) Kim's line and length rewarded with a wicket bowled by a peach of a delivery last ball of his spell, Muff picking up 2 wickets, 1 caught well by Kim and the other to the suprise of all watching a caught and bowled (though i tried my hardest to drop it!).

Dewbs and Sharif were next with Dewbs reverting to what he described as "leg-spin" (his quotation marks!) which looked more like"ICE CREEEEEAM" to us but was extremley effective and kept the pressure on the oppo and was unlucky to have 2 chances go begging one by himself and a tough chance to sharif (ed - kind reporting - it went stright to him a dolly pace!), Sharif quickly made ammends by taking 3 wickets in his only over (leaving him on a hat-trick for next time) 2 caught by Shandy and one comically stumpped by the excellent Smitts who, taking a leaf from the Goughy book of keeping had argued (quite correctly) with the umpire the ball before that he had stumped the batsmen who was given not-out even though was quite clearly out before getting his man with the next delivery.

Dewbs came back for his second over and picked up the last wicket, again stumped by Smitts (Ed - off a wide...haven't heard that for a while...). Cbbies 83 all out, a great effort considering their rapid start.

Paul 4-0-1-33
Shandy 4-0-1-10
Kim 4-0-1-15
Muff 4-0-2-11
Dewbs 1.1-0-1-5
Sharif 1-0-3-6.

Opening for the Casz were Will in the anchor role and Osama Bin O'Reilly in as the pinch hitter and blow me if it didnt work, Steveo having a good old slap and Will trying to deafen everybody with his calling milking the runs and giving Steveo the strike.

Unfortuanatly Will shouted so loud that Steve, disorientated and confused ended up stranded and was run-out for a quick fire 17. Enter Mr Pike who looked good for the 3 balls he faced before being bowled for 0. Will's innings came to an end again bowled (the pitch a little lower and slower in the twighlight) for 10. Ash and Smitts looked to keep us on track but Smitts played over the top of the ball to be bowled for 3. With the required run rate slowly going up Dewbs and Ash tried hard to pick up the runs where they could but faced with accurate bowling the chances were limited, Dewbs being bowled after what he said was a panic brought on by 2 dot balls!! and Ash adjudged l.b.w trying to move it along for a solid 10. Into the tail with the run rate hovering about 6 an over it was looking to be going down to the wire with Sharif and Scott both new to the crease. Well, it looked like it was going to be close untill Scott decided that he needed a pint and smacked 21 off 2 and bit overs(144444) to finish the game, an excellent knock that capped a fine all round performance, Sharif ending on 2 not-out with Kim, Pabs and Muff adding to their dnb totals. Good game, good banter and a good start to the league season.
T hanks to all who played and the good support from Shag and Shakes, JF for umpiring, Fox for remembering to bring the kit and Andy Ffor his colourful scoring and for not doing anything illegal to his pre-teen fan club....
